We Were Sisters | Wendy Clarke | Bookouture | Pub : August 8, 2019 | Pages : 320 Unfortunately, this book didn’t live up to my expectations, and I had to give this one 3.5 stars. The premise of the book was a good one and I was very intrigued by where the story was going to go. However, I felt like the story was slow and dry. It took me quite a while to power through the novel. One of my main issues was that the main characters were unlikeable and one-dimensional. We didn’t get much character development that would usually permit me to gain more sympathy and get really invested in the story. This could have been a great thriller but the lack of character development, the predictable twists, and lacklustre ending just left me disappointed. This isn’t a horrible book, just kind of an average read. Even though this wasn’t my favourite book, I’d still be interested in reading other books by Wendy Clarke. Thank you to Bookouture for providing me with an electronic ARC of t...
Watch Out for Her | Samantha M. Bailey | Simon & Schuster | Pub : April 26, 2022 | Pages : 336 I won’t lie, this book took me a little while to get into it as I found the book's pace pretty slow. However, as I got more into it, I definitely was engrossed in the story. The story is told in past and present chapters, from different POVs. I thought that was a very interesting way to tell the story, and my sympathy for the main characters kept changing throughout the book. In addition, I found Samantha was a master at building suspense as most chapters ended with small cliff-hangers! The story was a bit predictable, but the ending was excellent, so I can let that slide. Overall great story that is beautifully written! I’ll definitely pick up another book by Samantha B. Bailey in the future. Thank you to Simon & Schuster for providing me with a physical ARC of this book. As usual, my reviews are my honest and unbiased opinions. Synopsis Wherever you go… she’ll be watching. ...
The Truth Behind the Lie | Sara Lövestam | Minotaur Books | Pub : August 27, 2019 | Pages : 288 What attracted me to this book was that it was from Sweden. I absolutely love books from Scandinavia, and already just knowing that my hopes were extremely high. However, this book turned out not to be my cup of tea. There were some interesting twists and many surprises that kept me going but the story sort of fell flat and dry to me. I did end up liking Kouplan’s character and wouldn’t mind reading other Kouplan books, in case this one was an anomaly, but overall, I didn’t quite enjoy this book as much as I wanted to. Maybe it was all in the translation, but this book isn’t getting rave reviews on Goodreads so maybe I’m in the norm on this one. Thank you to St. Martin's Press for providing me with an electronic ARC of this book via NetGalley. As usual, my reviews are my honest and unbiased opinions. Synopsis When a six-year-old girl disappears and calling the police isn’t an ...
Anything for you | Saul Black | St. Martin's Press | Pub : November 12, 2019| Pages : 340 TW - sexual abuse, child abuse, graphic sex and language, rape. This is Book #3 from the Valerie Hart series. Adam, a well-known prosecutor, is murdered, but his wife Rachel, who was also stabbed, survives. However, the detective in charge, Valerie, conceals the fact that she had a previous relationship with Adam. Including unpredictable twists and turns, Saul Black builds an intriguing mystery extending from Philadelphia to San Francisco. I loved that the book contains the trifecta of sex, murder, and surprise twists. However, I didn’t particularly enjoy the language that was used in the book, it was very crude. After reading some other reviews, many women have mentioned that they could one hundred percentage tell this was written by a man, so that might explain the language used. I didn’t like some of the characters and the ending felt unsatisfying, however, the overall story was very well...
Watch Her Disappear | Lisa Regan | Bookouture | Pub : April 12, 2022 | Pages : 242 This is book #14 in the Josie Quinn Series ! As usual, I always recommend starting with Book #1 in the series! So worth the read. I love how, with each book, we dive more into one of the main character’s pasts and get to know them more! In this instance, it was Chief Chitwood’s past, and it was long overdue as we knew basically nothing about Chief Chitwood! Going through the book, I really ended up liking the Chief more and gained an understanding of his personality. It’s been a couple books though that we haven’t gotten much story development between Noah and Josie, and I’m really sad, but I get it. The series needs to survive for another 23719238 books, so I’ll take the slow development! It took me a while to get into the story, but once I got into it, I couldn't stop reading! This is my favorite series and I love Lisa Regan’s writing so much – I highly recommend this book and thi...
The Perfect Wife | J.P. Delaney | Ballantine Books | Pub : August 6, 2019 | Pages : 413 I listened to the audiobook version of this book and actually quite liked it! It delves into the realm of sci-fi, which I’m usually not a fan of, but I quite enjoyed this story! This was such an entertaining, mind-bending, and twisty story! I don’t want to mention anything that could spoil this story for you! You will just need to trust me and dig into this book! This was such a well-thought-out and planned story, that was executed perfectly! I probably would need to read this twice to totally get everything, especially since I listened to the audio version. This book made me want to pick up other J.P. Delaney books! Highly Recommend if you want a mind-bending story! Synopsis The perfect life. The perfect love. Abbie awakens in a daze with no memory of who she is or how she landed in this unsettling condition. The man by her side claims to be her husband. He's a titan of the tec...
A Dark and Secret Place | Jen Williams | Crooked Lane Books | Pub : June 8, 2021 | Pages : 292 I really wanted to love this one. I felt like this was right up my alley. After her mother’s suicide, Heather finds letters that prove that her mother had been corresponding for years with the Red Wold, an infamous serial killer, Michael Reave, who has been in prison for 20-years for his crimes. After reading that premise, my hopes were pretty high! However, those hopes soon extinguished themselves. I just couldn’t get into this book, I started listening to it on Audiobook in July and just finished in December, and I felt like it was excruciating to finish. This is an extremely slow-paced mystery, and the characters aren’t really fascinating. The ending picked up a bit, but still, at that point, I had enough and didn’t really care anymore. I hate to say it, but this book just wasn’t for me. Thank you to Dreamscape Media for providing me with an Audiobook version of ...
Stone Cold Heart | Caz Frear | HarperCollins | Pub : July 2, 2019| Pages : 352 This is book #2 in the Cat Kinsella series . This could be read as a stand-alone, but I would highly recommend reading Book #1 Sweet Little Lies , there’s a lot of background information on that book. I quite enjoyed Sweet Little Lies , so I thought I would check out this one, and it did not disappoint! My only qualm with this series is that it usually starts off really slow, and with lots of character development. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just I usually would rather read a story that captured my attention from the very start, but it was still a very good mystery! When a young Australian woman, Naomi, is found murdered in her flat, Cat and the crew begin their investigation and discover a link to the local coffee shop manager Joseph Madden, who had approached Cat about his wife several months prior. This raises suspicions about a whole cast of personalities, and Cat and DS Luigi Parnell find themselves i...
The Boy from the Woods | Harlan Coben | Grand Central Publishing | Pub : March 17, 2020 | Pages : 371 I love Harlan Coben! He’s the first author that made me fall back in love with reading again when I was a teen! So I always have high hopes going into a Harlan Coben book! This one wasn’t my favorite of his, but it was still a really good mystery! I ended up listening to the audiobook version of this book, so many that could be a reason for the lower score, but in general, I just thought this book was very slow-burning, which probably decreased my rating. In this book, what begins as a missing person investigation quickly becomes much more. Politics, power, romance, bullying, family, loss, and the impact of secrets, and society are all included in this novel. Coben creates a large cast of characters, each with their own personality and voice. I did really like Wilde’s character and would probably love a series revolving around him! What sold me on this book was the en...
