Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo Review

“It’s always just you and me.”

Apparently I am on a roll with reading books this weekend. I am buddy reading the Shadow and Bone series, Six of Crows series, and King of Scars with my bookstabestie @natalie_the_reader. It’s a lot of books but if they all read as quickly as Shadow and Bone, we will have no problem accomplishing our goal.

Fantasy books were not really on my radar until late 2019. Sure, I had read Twilight when I was younger, but I didn’t read other fantasy books. Then I read Ninth House in the fall and I really just fell in love with the genre.

Shadow and Bone is about a girl named Alina and her best friend Mal. They grew up together and never really parted. Until that one day when everything changed, and Alina learned she was special. She was Grisha.

Alina was told she was going to help save the world. What she didn’t know was what the cost of saving the world would be.

I don’t want to go into it much more than that because honestly, it would require a ton of spoilers and I am very anti-spoiler. If you like fantasy, read this book. It’s easy to follow along and I read the 356 pages in 2 days. I haven’t flown through a book like that in a while. Leigh Bardugo is so gifted when it comes to creating worlds and characters. I am ready to dive into the next book.

Also, this series is being turned into a Netflix show sometime this year. So I highly recommend reading it before that happens.

Synopsis (Credit: Goodreads)

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.
