In Another Time by Jillian Cantor Review

I have to start out by saying I never read historical fiction since I really don’t enjoy this genre, but I will admit I actually ended up enjoying this book! It was very interesting overall and very interesting seeing the perspective of the characters during the war as this book revolves around WWII and how it was living in Germany prior to Hilter’s climb in popularity and afterwards

This book is a mix of historical fiction and science fiction, two genre that aren’t generally my cup of tea, and you know what? it worked perfectly in this story!

In addition, it’s also a love story between Hanna and Max. Hannah is Jewish so when it becomes dangerous to be a Jew in Germany, Max must save Hannah. I absolutely fell in love with Max and Hannah and was absolutely rooting for them.

This book will pull at your heartstring, so many emotions from start to finish.
I’m actually glad my friend recommended this book, it’s a beautiful story that is beautifully written.
In Another Time by Jillian Cantor was the first historical fiction book I had read in a long time and I was a bit nervous about it but it turns out it was a very enjoyable read. It's about WWII and the time in Germany leading up to it. The reader learns about Hitler's climb in popularity and his hatred for the Jews.

It's a beautiful book that is beautifully written and the characters are well developed. The setting is set around World War II, with time laps ranging from the 1930s to the 1950s. Hanna and Max's story may be different from other WWII stories you've read before but the author put together a well researched historical fiction novel.

As the story progress, the reader goes through a variety of feelings. There were times I wanted to cry, other times where I wanted to hug the characters and then there were many times where my heart just broke. When a book gives the reader that much emotions, to me that's a truly well done job. I haven't read other books from Jillian Cantor but upon finishing In Another Time, I will definitely be adding her other books to my TBR.

Thank you to HarperCollins Canada for my gifted copy. As always, my reviews are my honest and unbiased opinions.

Synopsis

Love brought them together. But only time can save them…

1931, Germany. Bookshop owner Max Beissinger meets Hanna Ginsberg, a budding concert violinist, and immediately he feels a powerful chemistry between them. It isn’t long before they fall in love and begin making plans for the future. As their love affair unfolds over the next five years, the climate drastically changes in Germany as Hitler comes to power. Their love is tested with the new landscape and the realities of war, not the least of which is that Hanna is Jewish and Max is not. But unbeknownst to Hanna is the fact that Max has a secret, which causes him to leave for months at a time—a secret that Max is convinced will help him save Hanna if Germany becomes too dangerous for her because of her religion.

In 1946, Hanna Ginsberg awakens in a field outside of Berlin. Disoriented and afraid, she has no memory of the past ten years and no idea what has happened to Max. With no information as to Max’s whereabouts—or if he is even still alive—she decides to move to London to live with her sister while she gets her bearings. Even without an orchestra to play in, she throws herself completely into her music to keep alive her lifelong dream of becoming a concert violinist. But the music also serves as a balm to heal her deeply wounded heart and she eventually gets the opening she long hoped for. Even so, as the days, months, and years pass, taking her from London to Paris to Vienna to America, she continues to be haunted by her forgotten past, and the fate of the only man she has ever loved and cannot forget.

Told in alternating viewpoints—Max in the years leading up to WWII, and Hanna in the ten years after—In Another Time is a beautiful novel about love and survival, passion and music, across time and continents.
