The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf | Review

Such a great “lock-room” mystery! I’m slowly becoming a fan of Heather’s! I’ve read three of her books and this one is my favorite so far!

I read this book the minute it came out and read it in 2 days. I couldn’t stop reading.

There were lots of characters to get acquainted with, especially in the first chapter, but it was fairly easy to keep up.

This was a tense-filled action-packed thriller told in 3 POVs. One of the POVs was also anonyms which added to the mystery and intrigue!

I'm not sure what it is about books set in an isolated house/cabin during a snowstorm that makes the story so much more enjoyable, but it does, and I’m obsessed! Given the setting, I found the book to be very atmospheric, which I LOVE. I could read these types of mysteries all day.

Expect the unexpected with this book; there were so many twists and turns! It was almost the perfect mystery/thriller. The only thing I didn’t like was the rushed ending. I have so many questions left to be answered, and some characters and/or subjects were just glossed over. That's my only issue with this one. Overall really great book!

Synopsis

She thought she was alone…

True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls—haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them.
