Maybe in Another Life | Taylor JenkinsReid | Washington Square Press | Pub: 7/7/15 “It’s entirely possible that every time we make a decision, there is a version of us out there somewhere who made a different choice. An infinite number of versions of ourselves are living out the consequences of every single possibility in our lives. What I’m getting at here is that I know there may be universes out there where I made different choices that led me somewhere else, led me to someone else. And my heart breaks for every single version of me that didn’t end up with you.” For my third Taylor Jenkins Reid book I read, Maybe in Another Life . This was gifted to me for my birthday and I just felt it calling to me from its new home on my bookshelves. It did not disappoint. We follow 29-year-old Hannah as she moves back to LA after years of being gone. The story is told from Hannah in two different realities. In reality one, she goes home from a night out with her best friend that she is curren...
Act YourAge, Eve Brown | Talia Hibbert | Avon Books | Pub: 3/9/21 “I will always be grateful for the things you’ve done for me. For the privileges and safety nets you’ve afforded me, for the ways you’ve supported me when I didn’t know who I was, even for pushing me to get a grip and make a change. I’m trying my best to make you proud, and I always will. But I’m not like the rest of this family, as much as I love you all. I’m a different person and I need different things and I work in a different way, and that’s okay.” Act Your Age, Eve Brown is the third Brown book. In it, Eve is ambushed by her parents to grow up. She’s never kept a job for a long period of time, she still lives at home and just lives off the money in the trust. Eve flees her parents’ home and stumbles upon a job opportunity where she meets Jacob, and they have a ROCKY start. Will this job finally be the job Eve loves and keeps? Or will she be scared of failing and run? This book is tied for my favorite in the s...
The Cursebreaker Series| Brigid Kemmerer | Bloomsbury YA “For the good of Emberfall. For the good of all.” I decided to review this series as a whole instead of each individually. I mean individually I enjoyed them all. Four stars for each one and as a series I give it four stars as well. In book one, A Curse So Dark and Lonely, we are introduced to Emberfall, Prince Rhen and Harper. Ironrose and Prince Rhen have been cursed by an evil enchantress. He repeats the same season over and over again with his commander, Commander Grey. In order to break the curse, Rhen must find a girl and get her to love him. Grey has the ability to leave Emberfall to find girls to bring to Rhen. Harper was not the first choice, but she was a great one. And yes, this is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. In book 2, A Heart So Fierce and Broken, we follow Commander Grey and Lia Mara on their adventures to unite Emberfall and Syhl Shallow. Lia Mara just wants peace between them but her mother, Queen Karis L...
The Lost Apothecary | SarahPenner | Park Row Books | Pub: 3/1/21 “It’s okay to change, but it’s not okay to hide, to bury parts of ourselves.” This book got delivered Monday evening from Book of the Month Club , I started it that night and I finished it Tuesday night. I cannot even remember the last time I devoured a book that quickly. In this book we follow present day Caroline and Nella from the past. Nella has taken over her mother’s apothecary, but she has turned it into something more sinister than her mother intended. She helps women murder the men in their lives who have done them wrong. Caroline is on a vacation in London after things aren’t going well at home. She finds a vial and traces it back to the apothecary and from there we let the story unfold. I definitely liked the past better than the future. I loved Caroline exploring and learning but I just found the past and the poisons much more intriguing. Guess I like history, who knew? It was a wild turn of events...
The Hobbit | JRR Tolkien | Mariner Books | Pub: 9/21/37 “No! There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell!” The decision to buy and read The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings series was brought on by watching The Hobbit movies with my husband. I also ordered the 6 movies because we ended up enjoying The Hobbit ones so much and neither of us have seen the LOTR movies in a very long time. While I enjoyed the book of The Hobbit, I liked the movies more. There is little action in the book and lots of walking and talking. You know me, I am not big on the talking, I am big on the action. I did however really enjoy this book. It’s about growth and determination and strength and bravery and war and hardship and friendship. I also think this is one I will need to re-read in the ...
