The Family Upstairs | Lisa Jewell | Atria Books | Pub : November 5, 2019| Pages : 340 This was actually my first Lisa Jewell book, and I’m not mad at this book! There were so many mixed reviews for this book, I truly didn’t know what to expect! But I was pleasantly surprised. I think the ending really up the star rating for me though! This book is told in three different POVs and goes back and forth from the past to the present. The chapters were pretty short which made it a quick read. The scary atmosphere and odd, unlikable personalities appealed to me. The satisfying ending was the cherry on top! Overall, it was a pretty good book. I’ll definitely add more of Lisa Jewell’s book on my TBR. Thank you to Atria Books for providing me with an electronic ARC of this book via NetGalley. As usual, my reviews are my honest and unbiased opinions. Synopsis An alternative cover edition for this ISBN can be found here. Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns ......
Poison Lilies | Katie Tallo | HarperCollins | Pub : May 24, 2022 | Pages : 368 This is book #2 in the Gus Monet Series. I really enjoyed this book, but it took me forever to get into it. The pace was so slow it took me days to try to power through the first half of the book. However, the last half did not disappoint! Gus is really starting to grow on me, and I loved the addition of some characters (no spoilers!) Gus is such a strong independent character, I just love her character so much, and her sidekick Levi! It makes the story so much better to have Gus and Levi attached at the hip. I’m looking forward to reading the next books in the series! I recommend reading Dark August prior to this one though! Otherwise, you are missing a lot of background information and events. In addition, I’ve lived in Ottawa for four years, so I absolutely loved the setting of this story! It was nice knowing where the locations in a book were for once! Great Canadian author, and great story! I h......
I'll Be Gone in the Dark | Michelle McNamara | HarperCollins | Pub : February 27, 2018 | Pages : 352 I listened to this as an audiobook, and I think that was the best decision because I felt like it made the atmosphere creepier in a way. It’s an incredibly unbelievable and fascinating story and it was very interesting the way it all played out. It’s just so hard to review True Crime, but I think everyone should read this book regardless of the reviews. It’s such an important story and the fact that Michelle passed away before they caught the Golden State Killer is just so sad. She is a brilliant writer and a great storyteller! I am amazed at all the research she completed on these crimes. I gravitate more towards fictional mystery & thrillers, but this makes me want to venture outside the box more and pick up true crime novels! Synopsis "You’ll be silent forever, and I’ll be gone in the dark." For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator commit......
The Silent Wife | Karin Slaughter | William Morrow | Pub : August 4, 2020 | Pages : 496 I really want to love Karin Slaughter’s book, but so far, I’ve rated them mostly lower than expected and that bums me out! However, Karin knows how to deliver dark, disturbing and brutal novels! She is an exceptional writer! This book delivered on those aspects! This is Book #10 in the Will Trent series , they can be read as standalones, but I think I’m missing out on a lot of the back story but just reading random Will Trent books. I think I’ll have to go back and start at #1. The whole series is exceptionally highly rated on Goodreads! Karin also included many plot twists, that I did not see coming! Overall, I enjoyed this book. I just honestly think I need to start at #1, and then I’ll truly be invested in this series! Highly recommend starting at Book #1. Synopsis When prodigal daughter Heather Evans returns to her family home after her mother's baffling suicide, s......
The Marriage Trap | Sheryl Browne | Bookouture | Pub : July 30, 2019 | Pages : 300 I’ve loved every book I’ve read by Sheryl Browne! They are always entertaining and quick reads! Sheryl is a master it is writing psychological/domestic thrillers and this one falls in the same category. However, having said that, this book is my least favorite from Sheryl. I was quite underwhelmed. This book was repetitious, and monotonous for the first 75% which made me almost DNF this book, but I powered through. Sometimes books can redeem themselves with the ending, but it wasn’t the case with this one. In addition, the character was absolutely unlovable and vile, they were getting on my nerves at some point. Usually, you can empathize or root for at least one of the characters, but I wasn’t in this case. There are many twists and turns, but I ended up predicting most of them before they occurred. I still recommend reading Sheryl Browne books, maybe just not this one. Thank you to Bookouture for pro......
