Cold-Blooded Liar  | Karen Rose | Berkley Books | Pub : February 28, 2023 | Pages : 464 I am already a forever fan of Karen Rose, so picking up this book was a no-brainer!  In this one, we have Detective Kit McKittrick that works for the SDPD. After her foster sister was killed, she made it her mission to become a detective who listens and approaches a case with all of her might. On the other hand, we have Dr. Sam Reeves', a successful, kind-hearted psychologist whose patient starts telling him secrets throughout their sessions, which prompts him to call Kit anonymously. He fears that his patient will kill soon or has already done so. Sam is now considered a suspect by the police even though the murderer is actually trying to frame him. As Kit and Sam start their own investigations, the puzzle's pieces start to fit together. Identifying the killer at last. I'll admit, my jaw dropped. I didn’t see that twist coming, this is definitely a worthwhile read. One thing I love th...
The Secret Mother is an addictive psychological thriller with an engaging story that keeps the pages turning. It’s action packed from the beginning, and although there was a part where things seemed stalled, I still wanted to know the ending. It was somewhat predictable, but it still had twists and turns that left me turning page after page on the edge of my seat.   Nobody likes to hear when a child goes missing and we all hope for a happy ending. I felt for Tessa as she worked on figuring out who this mysterious child was, while simultaneously dealing with her own grief of losing her children. This is a well written book and I absolutely loved it!   Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for my digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.   Rating: 4 stars Synopsis : Are you my mommy? Tessa Markham returns home to find a child in her kitchen. He thinks she is his mother. But Tessa doesn't have any children. Not anymore. She doesn't know who the lit...
I’m a HUGE fan of psychological thrillers! Suspense draws me in quickly into their webs of evil and their heinous ways. The plot is based on the author’s real life experiences as a dispatcher, so while the details of the events sometimes appeared wild, they were still realistic as they expose corruption and prejudice in society.   Stolen Things is told from 2 POVs – mother and daughter – who both exposes themselves to readers to allow them to see their weaknesses within themselves and their relationships. I loved the alternating POV between Laurie and Jojo, which keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for what will happen next. Although I found the story to drag a little about halfway through, it quickly picked back up and I still very much enjoyed it and would call it a page-turner. It is a very well plotted and written book with a storyline that is action packed from beginning to end. Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for the opportunity to read and review ...
Temper is not as suspense driven like I was expecting. I found it was a slow-burn, and although a lot was happening in the story, it didn’t quite grab my attention and didn’t really keep me on the edge of my seat. It’s unfortunate. It is quite the novel though. The reader dives into themes of sexuality, power, and manipulation. I wished it had more of a thriller element to the story, but it is more geared towards drama. If you go into Temper knowing that you’ll enjoy it.   Unfortunately, as a mystery/thriller fan, I was not the right audience for this book. I couldn’t get into the story and didn’t really like the main characters. I found them selfish and disturbing in their actions. The book has great potential with all the mind games and psychological manipulations between the characters.   Thank you Netgalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for giving me the opportunity to read a digital ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. Rating: 3 stars Synopsis : ...
Thank you Netgalley and Harper Collins Canada for giving me the opportunity to read this book. When I first started Good Husbands, I was expecting a thriller, but it is not. This is not a light read as domestic abuse and rape are discussed. The story immediately drew me in, but as I kept reading, I found that it slowly turned into a slow burn and ended up being too long for me. It is not a bad book, not at all, it just wasn’t what I was in the mood at the time (I read it during summer 2022 and was looking for good thrillers and mystery books).   The story had great promise – it follows three women/wives, who receive letters from a woman claiming that their husbands had raped her mother many years ago. All three wives are very different and how they handled things after receiving their letter was interesting. These women seem to be happily married, and the author has us thinking: Do we really know the people closest to us? Will they stay with their husbands and opt to not pursue ...
It's One of Us | J.T. Ellison | MIRA | Pub : February 21, 2023 | Pages : 400 Trigger warning: Infertility, miscarriage I adore J. T. Ellison, and I was fascinated by the premise of this. However, it was a little difficult for me to get into this one. This story had several interesting turns. The brief chapters and many viewpoints were enjoyable. A different character from the story was examined in each chapter. These were all equally entertaining to me. One of those tales where just when you think you understand what is going on, another twist appears. However, even though there were numerous perspectives and POVs, I wasn't immediately drawn in and I felt like the pace was very slow burning. It did pick up after 75% where you could expect twist after twist.  As much as the mystery element of it attracted me, I did predict the ending and felt the ending was a bit rushed, but overall, the plot and structure were original, and there was a lot of suspense included. I did appreci...
To be honest, I expected more from this book. It wasn’t boring, it just seemed it took forever to get through. I might not have been the right audience for this one. Most of the narrative revolve around the world of high finance at it’s finest, and what people are willing to do to others to make it to the top, which I have zero interest for. I can understand why tons of readers have enjoyed this book though: the corporate shenanigans and the sense of entitlement and greed that goes on.   The ending did surprise me (although totally unbelievable), so I’m glad I decided to read until the end. The first third of the book had my attention, building on the thrill of the Escape Room challenge that we knew was going to happen. Although the story alternates between the four members who are stuck in the elevator and Sara Hall, the second half of the book was too slow for me but did pick back up for the ending.   Overall, I could not stand many of the characters in the book, especially those w...
